If one system only speaks over a TCP/IP socket stream, serial, USB, GPIB, email, SMS, SAMBA, etc. If your host software is some Windows executable designed for, tested on, and certified for a particular line of industrial PCs, you'll want to stick with that (for example, if running Beckhoff TwinCAT, get a Beckhoff PC - then any problems are Beckhoff's, not yours to deal with!).
